V

SHE WOKE UP in bed—her own bed—and judging by the light falling through the curtains, it was around noon. Gingerly, Fiffi sat up, marvelling at her own ability to turn the sofa into a functional bed after returning home utterly plastered. Dear God, she had drunk so much! What would people think of her? What would… But…

A hand lay just shy of her thigh. For a split second, she thought she hadn’t woken up at all, but then the hand moved and made a noise, or rather, the person attached to the hand did. Fiffi turned her head and there was Roz, wide awake and looking back at her, an intense expression on their face which she couldn’t decipher, but which made her—

“Still drunk?” Roz turned on their side, facing her.

Fiffi shook her head, though she probably wasn’t being entirely truthful; she was pretty sure she shouldn’t be driving any buses today. Fortunately, she had the day off. Reaching across to the side table, her hand shook slightly as she found the roll of spearmints among the various bits and pieces that had already amassed there, even though she’d lived in the place nary a week. She popped one into her mouth and offered the roll to Roz.

“Still here?”

Roz nodded. They nodded, and then they smiled in a way that set little fires ablaze throughout Fiffi’s entire length and breadth; smiled until she fell back onto the mattress, all aglow.

“Still like me?” Roz retorted, pushing the mint from side to side in their mouth.

Fiffi covered her face with her pillow. This was likely not acting like an adult. “Oh God, I’m sorry!”

“Don’t be.” Roz’s voice was low, so low she could only just make it out from under her goose-feather cover. Fiffi peeped out. Roz looked serious now, a slight frown visible between their brows. “I like that you like me. If you do.”

Fiffi let go of the pillow completely. Roz’s eyes were gleaming, as if on the verge of tears, and her own embarrassment was nothing, nothing whatsoever, compared to that expression of pain—pain in those kind, self-possessed eyes! And for what?

“I think I should kiss you now. Would that be okay?”

Roz let out their breath in a puff and a tear fell free, even as their lips parted in the most brilliant, genuine grin.

“No, that would be perfect,” they said simply. Cautiously, Fiffi scooted closer and angled forward, pressing her lips to Roz’s. Roz gasped and pulled her towards them. Fiffi had to stifle a sob, her arms wrapping around Roz’s neck as Roz deepened the kiss, their hands going once again to the small of her back, stroking and pressing, as their lips stroked and pressed in turn.

Fiffi whimpered and they stopped, their eyes questioning, but she shook her head decisively, pulling them back into her embrace. Roz sniggered against her lips, a happy, exultant kind of snigger, and Fiffi ran her hands up over the short, tickly hair that was cropped close to their skull.

“I like you,” she breathed mintily between kisses.
